Have you noticed how engaged your students are when they are involved in structured creative projects? The Middletown Art Center (MAC) provides exciting visual arts engagement opportunities right here in Lake County!
Picture
Fieldtrips to MAC are a way for your students K-12 to gain quality cultural exposure that is locally accessible. Highly qualified and experienced teaching artists guide students through exhibits in MAC’s contemporary art gallery featuring local artists, followed by hands on art making in the studio/classroom.  Our understanding of the world around us comes alive and takes on new meanings through the lens of art and artistic expression!

Our goal is for art education to be equitable and accessible to all Lake County children so that they will grow up with art being a relevant and integrated part of their lives!
At MAC we believe that the Arts are a gateway into the natural world, diverse cultures, and history; the arts facilitate compassion for oneself, and others.  There is plenty of documentation that the arts support students’ academic achievement and self esteem, and encourage both personal growth and collaborative work.

Sample Activity
Integrating Visual Art and Common Core State Standards through explorations and engagement.

Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity have all been identified as required skills for students to be prepared for college and career readiness. These are the foundation of Common Core Curriculum goals and skills we engage in throughout field trip activities at MAC.

The MAC gallery features work by local artists in a variety of mediums. Exhibits are curated around a theme every 3 months. Students are led in observational activities and discussions in the gallery, and explore their own creativity and problem-solving skills in hands-on activities:

SELF PORTRAITS and PATTERNS:
In the gallery: Students engage in reflective response and discussion of work in the gallery through observation and questioning that will inform their original compositions on paper. Their compositions will be crafted using cut and torn papers after observing how artists use repetition and variation of shapes to create pattern, rhythm, and movement. Considerations of how color creates mood and symmetrical vs. asymmetrical balance within a composition will guide their design process.

In the studio: Students create a mixed-media self-portrait after a warm-up introduction.  Proportion, symmetrical vs. asymmetrical balance and placement of facial features are discussed and practiced. Their self-portrait will later be glued to the background to create a unique, original work.

The combination of our gallery based discussions and observations, with our studio activities provide a unique opportunity and breadth of engagement for students to practice and develop many ELA Common Core, and VAPA Standards embedded within these lessons. This field trip is designed for language acquisition and art skills for younger grades (specifically grade 4), especially related to the vocabulary we use to describe art. This also results in an understanding of the way many words have multiple meanings, and builds connections between visual imagery and language.

The MAC acknowledges that we operate on the unceded ancestral lands of the people known as Pomo, Wappo, Wintun, and Lake Miwok. Their descendants, the Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California Nation, live here today.
They are the past present and future stewards of this land.

We stand in solidarity with the First People recognizing the great harm done to them here, as well as their resilience. We pledge to continue to build authentic relationships and work together with them through creative action, towards healing both the land and the people.

We also recognize that our work is but a small step towards reconciliation and that there is much work to be done.
El MAC reconoce que operamos en las tierras ancestrales no cedidas de los pueblos conocidos como Pomo, Wappo, Wintun y Lake Miwok. Sus descendientes, la Nación Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California, viven aquí hoy.
